Precision in Power Plant Decommissioning

Charlottenburg Power Plant

Within the listed turbine hall of the Charlottenburg Combined Heat and Power Plant in Berlin, DSD Heavy Lift was commissioned to dismantle two steam turbines. The works were carried out within the existing power plant structure and required meticulous planning as well as the safe handling of heavy components in a highly confined environment.

For the dismantling and removal of the turbine components, DSD Heavy Lift developed a tailor-made lifting and skidding concept. Using a specially designed steel structure, synchronized lifting systems, and controlled skidding technology, the individual components were safely transferred, moved, and prepared for further dismantling.

The decommissioning of historic energy facilities presents unique challenges in terms of engineering, logistics, and safety. This is where well-designed heavy lift solutions demonstrate their true value: when existing infrastructure, limited space, and heavy loads must be managed with absolute precision. While part of the facility has been dismantled, one of the turbines will be preserved as a piece of industrial heritage and will find its place in a museum.
